SSA Systems (Space Situational Awareness)
Europe's leading optical and radar-based Space Surveillance & Tracking network, delivering collision alerts, orbit determination, and space domain awareness for 12,000+ trajectories nightly.
About
Indra Space operates one of Europe’s most experienced optical observation networks for Space Surveillance & Tracking (SST) and Space Domain Awareness (SDA). The network provides collision prevention, fragmentation detection, re-entry alerts, object characterization and orbit determination, space environment modelling, space weather monitoring, and Near-Earth Object (NEO) tracking.
Key hardware includes the S3T Surveillance Radar (S3TSR) — a 13.2-metre Cassegrain antenna operating in C-band capable of detecting LEO and MEO objects — and the LEO Optical Fence, a real-time all-sky monitoring system with multi-channel rotational optics. The network operates 365 nights per year across sites in Spain, Portugal, Chile, and Australia, delivering data latency under 15 minutes.
With 12,000+ trajectories tracked nightly, 120,000 daily measurements, and minimum detectable object size of ≥10 cm at ~1,400 km altitude, Indra’s SSA network is a key contributor to Europe’s independent space domain awareness capability and a primary data provider to the EU SST Consortium.
