About

The Lunar Booster Stage (LBS) is a cryogenic upper stage developed by Yuzhnoye SDO for injecting payloads from low Earth orbit onto translunar trajectories in support of crewed and uncrewed lunar exploration missions. With a liftoff mass of 92.6 tonnes and powered by two RD809K LOX/kerosene engines, the LBS can deliver 30.5 tonnes onto a translunar trajectory when launched aboard the Mayak-SH5 super-heavy launch vehicle. The RD809K engines provide up to 4 restarts each, enabling precise orbital targeting including trans-lunar injection burn optimization. The LBS serves as the core translunar injection stage in Yuzhnoye’s integrated crewed lunar exploration transportation architecture, bridging low Earth orbit and the cislunar environment.
