Description
The Global Environmental Monitoring System (GEMS) satellite constellation, initiated by Orbital Micro Systems Inc. (a subsidiary of Weather Stream), aims to revolutionize global weather data collection and distribution. The GEMS CubeSat was the first commercial microwave radiometer in orbit. This advanced technology leverages microwave radiometers to gather 3-dimensional temperature and moisture atmospheric profiles, capable of functioning effectively through cloud cover and in darkness, significantly improving numerical weather predictions. Plans are underway to expand the constellation for sub-hourly revisits of the entire planet, with collaboration from Thomas Keating Ltd. to advance millimeter-wave instruments. A hallmark feature is its provision of high-frequency data at 15-minute intervals, offering unparalleled spatial resolution and low revisit times, particularly benefiting under-observed regions. GEMS serves diverse markets including insurance, transportation, energy, mining, agriculture, finance, and governmental sectors. Notable milestones include the launch of the IOD-1 GEMS satellite, a 3U CubeSat with a 10 x 10 x 15 cm instrument, launched on April 17, 2019, aboard an Antares-230 from NASA Wallops Flight Facility. It was deployed into orbit on July 3, 2019, and began data reception on July 20, 2019, after commissioning tests. IOD-1 GEMS notably captured imagery of Super Typhoon Hagibis in October 2019. The project sets the foundation for future commercial passive microwave radiometry missions and the forthcoming GEMS 2 constellation.
