The principle of operation involves a Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) cylinder elongating to fracture a bolt or stud, thereby achieving separation of two or more components. It is non-pyrotechnic and field-resettable, with a minimum qualified life of 50 cycles. The device has heritage from the spacecraft Clementine (1994) and has been used in applications like GPS 3 and Mars Perseverance. It is designed for easy manual reset.
