About
EBAD’s NEA Hold Down Release Mechanisms (HDRMs) are the industry-leading non-pyrotechnic release devices for mission-critical space applications. Utilizing a split-spool design activated by a small electrical current through a fusewire (not a pyrotechnic initiator), NEA devices achieve fast, reliable release events — typically in milliseconds — while generating significantly lower shock than traditional pyrotechnic alternatives. Three sources of shock are eliminated or minimized: the absence of a pyrotechnic initiator removes two shock sources, and the gentle preload dissipation reduces the stored-energy contribution to near zero. The NEA product line includes HDRMs, pin pullers, lithium-ion cell bypass switches, and isolation valves. Compatible with existing pyrotechnic firing circuits and available in custom configurations. EBAD is the world’s largest supplier of non-explosive HDRMs for spaceflight, with over 20 years of heritage across commercial platforms including A2100, Spacebus 3000/4000, Thales EliteBus, Eurostar 3000, and Maxar LS-1300 buses, and NASA missions including the James Webb Space Telescope. NEA devices are resettable and can be factory refurbished.
