About
Magson’s Tow Fish Magnetometer is based on the company’s standard fluxgate magnetometer design and is available with either one or two sensors. Towed behind a survey vessel, it is used to measure the magnetic signature of the ocean floor for geological and resource exploration purposes. The sensor, an inclinometer, and the electronics are housed inside a fiberglass tow fish body (supplied by Marine Magnetics), providing a hydrodynamic, non-magnetic enclosure well suited to being dragged through water at survey speed. The device is powered and connected via an umbilical tow cable linking it to the survey vessel. Magson tow fish magnetometers are successfully employed on the German research vessel RV Sonne, operated by the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR), as well as by the Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel.
