Motiv Space Systems developed the primary robotic arm for NASA’s Mars 2020 Perseverance rover. This seven-foot (2.1 meter) long, five-degree-of-freedom (DOF) robotic arm is crucial for the mission, carrying some of the rover’s most critical science instruments. The arm’s turret holds key instruments for the search for signs of life, including SHERLOC and WATSON, PIXL, GDRT (Gaseous Dust Removal Tool), Ground Contact Sensor, and the Drill. The arm is designed to operate in extreme Martian conditions, with an environment rating down to -135°C and hardened against Martian dust and radiation. Its key applications include drilling Martian rocks for core sample collection, enabling science instruments to take images and analyze elemental composition and makeup of Mars, and handling and stowing samples taken from the surface into the rover chassis.
