About

GRIPPER is Nimesis Technology’s Hold-Down Release Actuator (HDRA) based on shape memory alloy (SMA) technology. Its operating principle is the gradual release of a nut by spreading two jaws apart, which allows the tie rod to be fully unloaded before releasing — eliminating mechanical shocks during actuation that could disturb sensitive payloads or instruments. GRIPPER is the thinnest actuator in its class capable of sustaining preloads of up to 1500 N. It has achieved TRL 9 with flight heritage including a high-tech rover mission to Phobos and Deimos. GRIPPER is suited for satellite, launcher, and rover deployment mechanisms where shock-sensitive payloads require a gentle release event.
