About

The Roll-Out Solar Array (ROSA), originally developed by Deployable Space Systems (DSS) and now produced by Redwire, is a high-performance, roll-stowable photovoltaic array that eliminates the hinges, latches, and rigid panels of traditional solar wings. The blanket structure deploys by unrolling from a compact cylindrical cannister, providing excellent mass efficiency and packaging density for missions where stow volume is at a premium.

ROSA has achieved extensive flight heritage. The iROSA (International Space Station Roll-Out Solar Array) upgrade program saw six ROSA wings installed on the ISS, increasing total station power generation from approximately 160 kW to 215 kW — a 30% improvement. ROSA also flew on the DART planetary defense mission and two ROSA wings are in production for the Lunar Gateway Power and Propulsion Element (PPE), demonstrating the technology’s readiness for cislunar missions.

Redwire’s expanded solar array portfolio includes ELSA (Extensible Low-Profile Solar Array) for constellation smallsats, FACT (Flexible Advanced Concentrator Technology) for high-concentration applications, HiPASS (High-Power Rigid Array Solution for SmallSats), and MADDIE (Modular Array for Direct Distribution of Integrated Energy).
