With space heritage dating back to 1958, Sheldahl has supplied thin-film thermal control material to space missions worldwide, an unsurpassed track record in the industry. Sheldahl engineers designed and developed the multi-layer insulation and thermal control materials used to protect the critical electronics onboard the James Webb Space Telescope, helping shield sensitive instruments from the extreme thermal swings of deep space. The product line includes multi-layer insulation (MLI) blankets, second-surface mirrors, conductive and non-conductive tapes, and thermal control coatings engineered to manage radiative heat transfer, minimize thermal gradients, and protect sensitive spacecraft electronics and structures from the vacuum and radiation environment of space. These materials are manufactured with the same vacuum deposition, adhesive formulation, laminating, and precision slitting/sheeting processes Sheldahl uses across its broader materials portfolio, ensuring consistency and reliability for programs ranging from national space agency missions to commercial satellite constellations. Sheldahl’s thermal control materials are specified for use across NASA’s crewed spaceflight programs and numerous robotic and scientific missions.
