SOC-100 Hemispherical Directional Reflectometer
The SOC-100 HDR is an automated reflectometer that measures polarized, angular diffuse reflectance, transmittance, and directional emittance in the 2.0 to 25.0 μm spectral range, operating as an attachment to the Thermo Scientific™ Nicolet™ iS50 FTIR Spectrometer.

- Source
- A custom heated cavity provides uniform 2π steradian radiation into the subtended hemiellipsoid from a 0.75″ ID opening centered at one ellipse focus. All cavity surfaces, excepting the opening, are insulated with high performance Min-K insulation and the unit is surrounded by a water cooled jacket.
- Resolution
- Depending on data requirement: 2, 4, 8, 16, or 32 cm-1 resolution may be employed.
- Sample size
- Standard: 1″ OD. Sample mounting can accommodate up to 3″ x 4″ samples.
- Automation
- The automated process is computer controlled by five stepper motors which provide: polarization (parallel, perpendicular and unpolarized), variable incident angles, sample standard interchange, beamblocker angles. The source beam chopping is synchronized to the movement of the FTIR mirror which eliminates the sample self-emission error.
- Bench space required
- 8′ of bench space, min 30″ depth to allow for iS-50 FTIR, SOC-100, temperature controller and computer.
- Electrical requirement
- Two 15 amp 120VAC circuits to support the SOC-100, the Thermo-Fischer iS-50 FTIR and the computer.
- Water requirement
- Room temperature, 0.5 GPM filtered to 50 micron particulate. Two ¼” compression fittings at the rear of the SOC-100.
- Purge gas requirement
- 0.5 – 1.0 SCFM inert dry nitrogen or clean dry air. ¼” quick connect fittings at the rear of FTIR and SOC-100.

About
The SOC-100 Hemispherical Directional Reflectometer is a sophisticated instrument designed for precise optical property measurements. It measures polarized, angular diffuse reflectance from 8° to 80° incident angles across the 2.0 to 25.0 μm spectral range (5000 – 400 cm-1), with the spectral range being modifiable based on FTIR optics. It can determine reflectance for parallel, perpendicular, and unpolarized beams at 12 user-selected angles, and separates reflectance into diffuse and specular components. Additionally, it performs collimated and scattered transmittance measurements at 0° incidence and directional emittance as a function of wavelength, angle (8° to 80°), and temperature beyond 500°C. Total hemispherical emittance as a function of temperature can also be measured. The system operates as an attachment to the Thermo Scientific™ Nicolet™ iS50 FTIR Spectrometer, which is a required component. Calibration is achieved by comparing scans of the specimen sample and a calibrated specular gold standard at each angle polarization combination. A custom heated cavity provides uniform 2π steradian radiation. The system offers selectable resolution settings of 2, 4, 8, 16, or 32 cm-1. It accommodates standard 1″ OD samples, with mounting options for up to 3″ x 4″ samples. Automation is computer-controlled by five stepper motors for polarization, variable incident angles, sample/standard interchange, and beam blocker angles. The SPECTRE software controls both the FTIR and SOC-100, acquiring, processing, and storing HDR data, and automating data acquisition tasks including FTIR operation, stepper motor sequencing, real-time graphical display, and data compilation. The SOC-100 HDR and its reference coupons are classified as EAR99 for export. The system requires 8 feet of bench space with a minimum 30-inch depth, two 15 amp 120VAC circuits, room temperature water at 0.5 GPM filtered to 50 micron, and 0.5 – 1.0 SCFM inert dry nitrogen or clean dry air. It operates between 60 to 80°F.
