About

The RD805 is a single-chamber staged combustion cryogenic rocket engine developed by Yuzhnoye SDO, utilizing an oxidizer-rich preburner cycle and incorporating tried-and-tested components from the highly reliable, serially produced steering engine RD-8 used on the Zenit launch vehicle. It burns liquid oxygen and kerosene propellants, producing 2.15 tf of vacuum thrust with a high specific impulse of 345 seconds. The staged combustion cycle offers higher efficiency compared to gas generator cycles used in older engine designs. The engine supports a single start, weighs 80 kg excluding gimbal drives, and is in development for advanced upper stage applications. Technology Readiness Level of 4 indicates validation in laboratory and subscale environments.
