About

The RD870 is a single-chamber dual-thrust staged combustion cryogenic rocket engine developed by Yuzhnoye SDO, designed as the primary propulsion unit for the Cyclone-4M and Cyclone-5 first stages. It burns liquid oxygen and kerosene propellants, producing 79.3 tf of sea-level thrust and 89.4 tf of vacuum thrust, with specific impulses of 301.5 seconds at sea level and 340 seconds in vacuum. Four RD870 engines are clustered on the Cyclone-4M and Cyclone-5 first stages to form the RD874 propulsion system with a combined thrust of 319.2 tf at sea level. The dual-thrust capability enables optimal performance during different atmospheric flight phases. The engine weighs 1,420 kg excluding gimbal drives and has achieved Technology Readiness Level 6 through the Cyclone-4M development program.
