About

The RD872 is a single-chamber dual-thrust staged combustion cryogenic rocket engine developed by Yuzhnoye SDO for second stage propulsion applications across the Cyclone-5 and Mayak launch vehicle families. It utilizes tried-and-tested technologies of the Zenit launch vehicle, burning liquid oxygen and kerosene to produce 93 tf of vacuum thrust with a specific impulse of 350.5 seconds. The dual-thrust capability allows for throttling to optimize trajectory performance. The RD872 weighs 1,530 kg including mounts and gimbal actuators, and has achieved Technology Readiness Level 6, confirming demonstration in a relevant environment. Its high thrust and specific impulse combination makes it one of the highest-performing LOX/kerosene upper stage engines in Ukraine’s engine portfolio.
