About
EBAD’s Mini-Frangibolt® Actuators are utilized in satellite applications to provide a simple and effective non-pyro separation system between two components. With the ability to customize the #4 Titanium (Ti) fastener to meet the applications joint design, the mini-frangbolt offers design flexibility in one of our most compact packages. It is easy to use, with straightforward resetting using a compression reset fixture and replacement of the notched #4 Titanium (Ti) fastener. The principle of operation involves applying power to internal heaters to raise the temperature of a Single Crystal Shape Memory Alloy (SCSMA) cylinder, causing it to expand and produce strain on the EBAD provided #4 Titanium (Ti) fastener, breaking it at a predetermined notch. These actuators must be ordered with custom Titanium (Ti) notched #4 fasteners manufactured to strict tolerances. Accessory hardware such as G10/Ti washers, lock nuts, and enclosures are available. For cold operation, G10 washers are recommended for thermal isolation. Switch washers, when wired in series, can be used as an automatic shut-off switch once tension is released and the fastener is broken. Since 1994, the frangibolt has extensive heritage in space applications, including solar array and instrument deployment, instrument launch locks, and optic covers. Key features include non-pyrotechnic operation, easy resetting, a redundant firing circuit, maximum reliability through design simplicity, and flight pedigree and testability. The device is comprised of a machined SCSMA cylinder, encapsulated with redundant resistive heaters and embedded RTDs, all wrapped in a silicone rubber compound for thermal and electrical isolation.
