Global Environmental Monitoring System (GEMS)

The GEMS family of microwave radiometer instruments are designed to reduce the costs of satellite meteorology and enable improved global weather forecasting.

About

The Global Environmental Monitoring System (GEMS) family of microwave radiometer instruments is a core focus of Weather Stream (formerly Orbital Micro Systems). The mission behind GEMS is to reduce the costs of satellite meteorology while enabling improved global weather forecasting by commercializing miniaturized millimeter wave radiometer technology. The GEMS pathfinder mission was the first commercial mission and only commercial passive microwave radiometer in space as a satellite based data service. Weather Stream is focused on the development of multiple microwave radiometer instruments for ground, air, and space based applications. They have also provided custom radiometer calibration hardware to Ball Aerospace for the Department of Defense’s Weather Satellite Follow-on – Microwave program and are currently developing a custom calibration solution for NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory for the Electrojet Zeeman Imaging Explorer mission (EZIE). Weather Stream has also worked with NASA on the Atmosphere Observing System, having recently been awarded a Phase A contract to develop a unique radiometer for the mission, which focuses on Aerosols, Clouds, Convection and Precipitation science for NASA’s Earth System Observatory mission.
