About
The NEA® Model 9102G is a non-pyrotechnic Hold Down & Release Mechanism (HDRM) designed for one-shot, electrically initiated release. It can carry a very high tensile preload, up to 4,000 lbf (17,800 N), until commanded to release. The mechanism operates by holding a release rod in place with two separable spool halves, which are secured by a tight winding of restraining wire. This wire is held by redundant electrical fuse wires; applying sufficient electrical current to either circuit causes the restraint wire to unwind, allowing the spool halves to separate and release the rod and its associated preload. This actuation method is simple, reliable, and forms the basis for other EBAD products. Key features include non-explosive function, high restrained preload, extremely low release shock, high simultaneity for multiple hold-down points, and a wide operating temperature range. It can be operated with pyrotechnic initiation circuitry and is made from space-rated materials. The product has over 20 years of flight heritage and flight pedigree on more than 750 space platforms. Factory refurbishments are available. Different configurations are available with alternate release rods, mounting features, and connectors, including metric options. EBAD also offers a companion HDRM Firing Unit (HFU) to multiplex firing orders and ensure proper current application and actuation simultaneity.
