About

The NEA® Model 9107 is a Hold Down & Release Mechanism (HDRM) designed for applications requiring the secure holding and subsequent release of components with high tensile preloads. It operates as an electrically initiated, one-shot release mechanism. The preload is maintained by a release rod held by two separable spool halves, which are secured by a tightly wound restraining wire. This wire is held in place by redundant electrical fuse wires, ensuring maximum reliability as actuation of either circuit allows release. When sufficient electrical current is applied, the restraint wire unwinds, causing the spool halves to separate and release the rod and its associated preload. The mechanism is characterized by its non-explosive hold down and release function, high restrained preload capability, and extremely low release shock. It is suitable for a wide operating temperature range and can be operated with pyrotechnic initiation circuitry. The Model 9107 has a flight pedigree on more than 750 space platforms and over 20 years of flight heritage. Different configurations are available with alternate release rods, mounting features, and connectors, including metric options. Typical applications include antennas, reflectors, solar arrays, deployable radiators, booms, masts, scientific instruments, satellite and spacecraft dispensing, and launch vehicle/missile stage and fairing separation.
