About
The NEA® Model 9108 is a Hold Down & Release Mechanism (HDRM) from EBAD, a global leader in non-pyro HDRMs. This mechanism is designed to carry a very high tensile preload until commanded to release. Its principle of operation involves a release rod held by two separable spool halves, which are secured by a tightly wound restraining wire. Redundant electrical fuse wires hold the restraint wire in place, ensuring high reliability as actuation of either circuit triggers the release. Upon application of sufficient electrical current, the restraint wire unwinds, allowing the spool halves to separate and release the rod and its associated preload. Key features include non-explosive hold down and release, high restrained preload capability, extremely low release shock, and high simultaneity for multiple hold-down points. It offers a wide operating temperature range and can be operated with pyrotechnic initiation circuitry. The Model 9108 utilizes space-rated materials, offers factory refurbishments, and boasts more than 20 years of flight heritage with flight pedigree on over 750 space platforms. Different configurations are available, including alternate release rods, mounting features, and connectors, with metric options also provided. Typical applications include antennas, reflectors, solar arrays, deployable radiators, booms, masts, scientific instruments, satellite and spacecraft dispensing, and launch vehicle/missile stage and fairing separation.
