About
The Lunar Solar Power Plant (SPP) is a surface power generation system developed by Yuzhnoye SDO designed to provide sustained electrical power to an industrial-research lunar base during the lunar day and maintain essential power levels through the approximately 14-Earth-day lunar night using energy storage. With 100 square meters of solar panel area, the system generates 10 kW during typical lunar day operations and maintains 1 to 2 kW during lunar night. The total system mass is 4,110 kg. Energy storage bridging the lunar night is accomplished through a combination of lithium-ion batteries and electrochemical generators (fuel cells). The SPP is a key enabling infrastructure element for any long-duration crewed operations at the lunar surface, providing power to habitats, science instruments, life support systems, and surface mobility vehicles.
