About
The RD809K is a restartable single-chamber staged combustion cryogenic rocket engine developed by Yuzhnoye SDO for upper stage pitch and yaw control applications. Derived from proven Zenit launch vehicle heritage components and technology, it burns liquid oxygen and kerosene propellants, producing 10 tf of vacuum thrust with a high specific impulse of 352 seconds. The engine supports up to 4 restarts, enabling complex multi-burn upper stage trajectories including lunar orbit injection from LEO and GTO-to-GEO transfers. Weighing 330 kg excluding gimbal drives, the RD809K has achieved Technology Readiness Level 6. It is planned as the propulsion unit for the Cyclone-1 upper stage and serves as the primary engine for the Lunar Booster Stage (two engines) in the Mayak lunar exploration architecture.
