TiNi Frangibolt Actuator FC2
The EBAD Frangibolt® Actuator is a simple and effective non-pyrotechnic separation system for satellite applications. The FC2 model utilizes a Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) cylinder that expands when heated to its transition temperature, creating strain on a custom Titanium (Ti) notched fastener, causing it to fracture at a predetermined notch and achieve separation. This design […]

About
The EBAD Frangibolt® Actuator is a simple and effective non-pyrotechnic separation system for satellite applications. The FC2 model utilizes a Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) cylinder that expands when heated to its transition temperature, creating strain on a custom Titanium (Ti) notched fastener, causing it to fracture at a predetermined notch and achieve separation. This design offers flexibility in a compact package. It is easy to reset using a compression reset fixture and replacement of the notched fastener. Key features include non-pyrotechnic operation, easy resetting, redundant firing circuit, maximum reliability through design simplicity, and flight pedigree. The device is comprised of a machined SMA cylinder, encapsulated with redundant resistive heaters and embedded RTDs, all wrapped in a silicone rubber compound for thermal and electrical isolation. It has a minimum qualified life of 60 cycles.
