EBAD’s TiNi Pin Pullers are utilized in satellite applications to provide a simple and effective non-pyro separation system between two components where a pull force is required. The P5 model offers a 5 lbf (22 N) pull force. The pin puller is a reliable, fast-operating device that utilizes a Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) wire to release a latch, allowing internal compression springs to retract the pin. In the fully reset mode, the internal circuit is closed. When sufficient power is applied, current raises the temperature of the SMA wire, causing it to contract at its transition temperature. This releases internal ball locks and allows internal drive springs to retract the pin into the device body. Once retracted, the circuit opens, providing positive feedback that the device has actuated. The device is reset with a custom tool that either pulls the pin out from the front or pushes it out from the rear. Applications include solar array and instrument deployment, instrument launch locks, optic cover releases, and other space applications requiring a pull force. It has high non-actuated side load capability to withstand rigorous launch vehicle environmental levels. Key features include non-pyrotechnic operation, easy field reset, minimum 50 cycles, redundant firing circuit, maximum reliability through design simplicity, and flight pedigree and testability. The construction involves an SMA wire threaded through a latch and attached to electrical contacts. The latch retains internal ball bearings that keep compressed drive springs in place before actuation. A smaller internal reset spring assists in the reset process. The pin puller is fully vented, typically enclosed in aluminum alloy with a titanium flange, and has an output pin made of stainless steel with a tiolon finish. Alternative voltages utilize an internal resistor to protect the SMA wire from overheating. The P5 model has extensive heritage in space applications since the 1996 Mars Global Surveyor mission.
