About

RD-120MS is a modernized version of the RD-120 liquid rocket engine, using an oxidizer-rich staged combustion cycle (afterburning of oxidizing gas), designed for the upper stages of promising Russian and foreign launch vehicles. It runs on oxygen and kerosene propellants and incorporates a number of new technologies in its design. The engine can be adapted to customer requirements. Thrust vector control is achieved via camera (chamber) swing in two planes across 2 channels. The basic RD-120 engine was developed from 1976 to 1985, with its first flight on the Zenit launch vehicle on April 13, 1985. The modernized, boosted RD-120 (thrust increased up to 93 tf) first flew on a Zenit launch vehicle under the Sea Launch program on February 28, 2005. The RD-120MS itself was released in 2022 following forced development in 2001-2003 and modification in 2019-2022; the product has not yet achieved flight qualification, though the engine prototype (RD-120/boosted RD-120) was used on the 2nd stage of the Zenit launch vehicle. In total, 295 engines of the RD-120 family were manufactured, with 588 bench fire tests conducted totaling 141,608 seconds of operating time.
