An engineer picks a part by its figures. Yet of 5751 catalogued products only 1829 — 32% — come with a datasheet anyone can download; for the rest the numbers have to be requested by email. This is what that looks like across the market.
A product counts as open when its datasheet is published where anyone can fetch it. A datasheet available «on request» counts as closed, because to the engineer choosing a part the two are the same. Where we found no file, the manufacturer may still publish one somewhere we did not look — so these shares are a lower bound on openness, and the direction of the error is stated rather than hidden. This page also has no list of the least open companies: the figures would be accurate, but a public naming of the worst turns the conversation into an argument about method.
